Institute for Tropical Ecosystem Studies
The Institute for Tropical Ecosystem Studies (ITES) was established in the early 1950s within the University of Puerto Rico Medical School to conduct and evaluate experiments with gamma rays in the Luquillo Mountains of Puerto Rico (Luquillo Experimental Forest). Currently the institute is a unit of the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras, conducting research relevant to the management of natural ecosystems and atmospheric chemistry. It establishes and maintains long-term experimental and reference studies of ecosystems and applies knowledge gained to develop mechanisms for the restoration of degraded tropical ecosystems. The institute increases public awareness of the importance of natural ecosystems to human welfare through undergraduate and graduate education.
