Field House at El Yunque

High in the rainforests of the Luquillo Mountains and above the El Yunque Recreation Area of the Caribbean National Forest, the Department maintains a small house for daily and overnight use by researchers, and graduate and undergraduate classes. Conditions are relatively primitive but the house serves as a base of operations for scientific study in a variety of distinct, montane habitats: dwarf forest, sierra palm brakes, palo colorado forest and the upper reaches of the tabonuco forest. The house sits is in the middle of the palo colorado forest zone and is surrounded by epiphyte-laden palms. When night falls, the chorus of frogs (coqui species) creates a remarkable aural experience
